Just got a Realist for my Chris bass-Man, the sound of Jazz! At least, from all those vintage records I've been listening to. The Shertler Stat-B that was on it before was kind of too subdued for Ray Brown style finger attack-some farting was the result from assertive plucking of the "E" string. It sounded good for arco though. I'm good to go-for now.

We decided to put a classified section on the site. It's free to advertise, registration is required but we tried to make it as simple as possible.

If you have anything for sale or are looking to buy something then please check this new section. Although this section is fully functional there are one or two layout issues that are currently being rectified so if you experience any problems or have any other feedback we would be very grateful if you could tell us.
I know exactly what you mean. I cringe at times when i listen to the tracks on my myspace site thru the little speakers on my pc - they sound so much better thru my stereo. honest...Those tracks are slightly remastered live minidisc recordings. My understanding is that speakers have varying responses; and when recording quality comes into the equation a lot of the notes' fundamental can be lost. Not only does this affect the sound, but can also change the perceived pitch of the note. Think of those awful piezo p/up-straight-to-the-desk albums of the late 70's/early 80's and how the intonation sounds iffy - all overtone and no fundamental. Perhaps the answer is to start with as good a quality recording as possible to maintain clarity etc when it gets watered down. Maybe that's too obvious or optimistic. Perhaps a track could be remastered with small pc speakers in mind. I want to get some decent recordings for my site done at a friend's digital home studio at some point soon. If any interesting info comes to light i'll be sure to post.

I agree with most of what you're saying, but I feel your convictions are a little rigid. I play gut strings, and leave my amp at home whenever possible. However, when circumstances ask for amplification I use one. I think the key thing is, I use it because I want to, not because others want or expect me to. Avishai Cohen was in my hometown a couple of months ago for a clinic, and he has a huge sound. But he uses an amp when he has to. His approach is to turn up the amp no louder than the point where it starts to change the sound of the bass. Which to me sounds like good advice. He also explained that the best (if not the only) way to develop a big sound is to play without amplification as much as possible. And as my old teacher (Henk Haverhoek) writes on his website: "higher action makes your sound bigger, not necessarily better". Base action hight on your style of playing, not the other way around. And Ray Brown did play amped most of the time, probably the last 20 years or so. But he already had a big sound. Clayton's action is not particularly high, as is Chris McBride's, Ben Wolfe's, or Neal Caine's. And they all have big sounds, Wolfe and Caine don't even have pickups.
We also shouldn't forget that modern instruments are louder than old ones. Paul Chambers would have more problems with volume now too.

But like I said, I'm all for the acoustic approach, However, to each his own. There's a lot of great bassplayers out there who use amps.

This is my first post, so first things first: Hello to all great and helpfull bassists here! I've played bass guitar for a few years and about two months ago I started to learn to play upright. Wish me luck

About my question:

I'm also quite new to questions of harmony and theory, so please forgive me if this question is a stupid one

We were jammin on some idea with my band and we found ourselves stuck on a minor chord. I started playing something in diminished scale to that and it sounded quite well to me, yea, some tension was there, but thanks to that, alteration to dorian sounded really pleasant.
Now I'm trying to find out what I did there and seems that Aebersold says, over minor chord play diminished starting whloe step. Well I started with half step. And frankly, when I think about it, diminished starting with half step has minor third also - so it's minor - and has dominant seventh, which is also in minor chord so it fits perfectly! Seems ok to me. On the other hand, starting with whole step you'll find yourself playing major seventh over minor chord which has dominant seventh.

So my question should be obvious by now. Where am I wrong? And why aebersold wants me to play major seventh over minor chord?

When I think about it now, I already used that, I play major seventh over minor chord (harmonic minor for god's sake, i'm so short sighted!) and it sounds good also. So I'm gonna simplify my question:
How is it possible?

Thanks in advance for any answers to my a bit confusing post
